NPG Scholarship Contest

The NPG Scholarship Contest (NPG = negative population growth) offers high school seniors and most college students the chance to compete for 3 scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000 in value.Students will compete based on an essay written based on the following prompt:  "Write a letter to your Congressional Representative explaining that the United States simply has TOO MANY PEOPLE. Ask him/her to work to reverse this
problem by helping to create a U.S. Commission on Population Growth.  Cite specific areas you feel the Commission should evaluate, and give examples of what can be done to achieve the goal of reducing U.S.
population."

Entries must be received by April 24, 2009.  Students can find more information on the NPG Scholarship Contest web page.

As an aside I have to say, I don't know if we have "too many" people or not.  I suspect that we have too many old people, and not enough young people.  I think it's fairly clear that social security and medicare will fail when our "demographic time bomb" explodes in a decade or two.  Oh, and for the record, I'm one of the "old."
